Our History

The Pelican Waters Bowls Club, originally known as the Golden Beach Bowls Club, was formed in 1980 following the generous gifting of the freehold site for the establishment of the Club by the Henzell Family. The site at that time was virgin bush, described as “rugged, low lying and swampy but a willing group, including many would be bowlers, set about the task of raising money to establish the necessary infrastructure requirements.

A significant part of the funding came by way of generous donations and interest free loans and debenture arrangements with Club members. Members not only willingly volunteered their time to work to clear the site and establish a green but also participated in a very active fund raising program to help service the loans obtained by the Club for capital works.

In their spare time many members went off to West Caloundra Bowls Club to be coached in the “fine art”of the game of Lawn Bowls.

At 4:30am on the 12th January 1982, volunteers began planting the Tip Dwarf clippings which were to grow into the fine playing surface that we use today.

Following the erection of the Club house in March 1982, the first game on the Bevan Henzell green was played a month later on the 15th April. The 2nd green was opened for play in the following year and was named after Syd Lingard who was a major supporter of the Club in its early years.

The Club changed its name to The Pelican Waters Bowls Club in April 2002 in recognition of the fact that it was located on the boundary of the much larger new  Pelican Waters development.
